Bank holiday weekends are always the same, there is nothing ever to watch on TV, so Tony and I decided there would be no better time to watch the latest film sent to us buy Warner Bros., Argo.
The film is directed and stars Ben Affleck and is a true story based in Iran in 1979. The film starts as protestors start rallying outside the US Embassy in Tehran, panic spreads and documents are burnt and shredded. Just as the protestors gain access into the embassy and start to take hostages, six members of staff manage to escape. They find refuge with the Canadian ambassador and it’s Tony Mendez’s job as a CIA exfiltration specialist to get them out of Iran and back to the US.
Mendez (Ben Affleck) comes up with a bizarre plot, named the “best bad plan” to get them out by posing the six as Canadian film makers viewing Iran as a set for a fake film “Argo”. In order to make the cover story believable Mendez enlists the help of Hollywood make up artist John Chambers (John Goodman) and film producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). Together the trio create a fake film studio and press events to publicize the phony sci-fi film.
Meanwhile in Tehran, the Canadian ambassador’s Iranian housekeeper become suspicious and sweat shop kids are turned to reassemble the contents of the embassy’s shredders. Will Tony Mendez’s plan work and will he get the six our of Iran alive?
I’ll have to admit that for the first five minutes I wasn’t sure if I’d actually enjoy the film but I really, really did. It had some great comedy moments with John Goodman and Alan Arkin, an unfortunately catchy tag line and by the end I was quite literally on the edge of my seat. Well worth a watch and worthy of the Oscar and the BAFTA.
Argo is available now on DVD and Blu-Ray from Amazon.
The kiddywinks latest treat from their pals at Warner Bros. was the newly released Scooby-Doo Mask of The Blue Falcon which we watched on a cold Sunday night in front of the fire and wrapped in blankets.
This feature length film sees Scooby, Shaggy and the rest of the gang attend a comic book convention (Mega Mondo Pop Cartoon-a-Con) and they are very excited by the prospect of meeting their hero The Blue Falcon and, of course, his side kick Dynomutt. The highlight of this convention is the premier screening of a movie based on a modernised version of the classic TV show. However, Mr Hyde, the evil villain from the show appears and tries to bring the screening to a halt. Slime, monster bats and hounds are unleashed in an attempt to bring down the event but luckily Mystery Inc. are on hand to capture the beasts and solve the clues.
Both Imogen and Joseph loved the film, there were plenty of gasps, giggles and a couple of “hide under the covers” moments but nothing too bad to give nightmares. Imogen did her best to try and solve the mystery and guess the villain before the unmasking and did it, she’s now declared herself a detective.
Warner Brothers keep the children and I in quality entertainment for rainy, cold, snugly days and I love them for that. Their latest offering was “Now is Good” starring Dakota Fanning and Jeremy Irvine.
The film tells the story of Tessa a seventeen year old girl suffering from leukemia and we follow the last few months of her life as the cancer takes hold of her body. The blurb says “Tessa is seventeen and passionate about life. Diagnosed with a terminal illness, she determines to use every moment, compiling a catalogue of what a normal teenager would experience, including losing her virginity and taking drugs. With the help of her friend Zoey, she sets the list in motion. While her family deals with fear and grief, each in their own way, Tessa explores a whole new world. Falling in love with Adam, her new neighbour, wasn’t on the list, but it proves to be the most exhilarating experience of them all.”
However, the film is so much more. Tessa creates a bucket list which includes taking drugs, shoplifting, breaking the law, dancing all night and having sex. This makes for some funny scenes with Tessa’s best friend Zoey (Kaya Scodelario from Skins). Tessa lives with her Father (Paddy Considine) who has taken care of Tessa throughout her illness and understandably becomes a little wary of Adam taking the lead. Her Mother couldn’t be more different, she is late for hospital appointments and seems clueless about her care. Tessa meets and falls in love with neighbour Adam, who has just recently lost his Father. He helps Tessa complete certain parts of her list and the pair fall in love. There are some very corny scenes, usually involving Adam’s motorbike, but some highly emotional and beautiful ones too.
As the cancer spreads Tessa’s Mother comes through for her, her Father learns that he must let go an Adam makes plan to take up his university place. There were tears a plenty towards the end of the film as Tessa eventually slips away. It’s a wonderful film but possibly on a par with My Sister’s Keeper for being one of the saddest films I’ve watched.
Inside our Christmas stocking from Warner Brothers, as well as chocolate treats for the kiddywinks, were two newly released DVDs for both Tony and I.
I sat down to watch New Year’s Eve whilst Tony was at work late one night with a large glass of wine and laughed and cried. It’s a wonderful romantic comedy which boasts a huge cast of great names including Robert De Niro, Hilary Swank, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Zac Efron and Sarah Jessica Parker. The film follows the characters as they prepare for and celebrate New Year’s Eve. There are lots of story lines and that can be a little confusing at first but it all ties in nicely and there are some lovely characters with emotional stories. For comedy value I loved the pair of expectant parents desperately trying to induce so their baby can be the first born of the new year and scoop a cash prize and De Niro made me cry on more than one occasion. There are some lovely twists to the film so I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it.
Th Dark Knight Rises was much more of Tony’s thing and whilst I did sit down to watch it, I was multi tasking and writing Christmas cards at the same time. It takes off 8 years from where the last film left off with Batman in hiding after the death of Harvey Dent, for which he took the fall. New villain, Bane with his raspy voice and menacing looking mask is set on destroying Gotham City with a nuclear weapon of some sort and it’s down to Batman to save the city, naturally! He has help from Catwoman (I’d love to know what underwear she wears to make her waist so small) and police officer John Blake, who it’s revealed late on in the film that his real name is Robin John Blake. At 165 minutes it’s a long film but full of action, some very awesome gadgets and Christian Bale is rather beautiful even if you do only see his chin for most of it.
Imogen and Joseph were sent the most wonderful box of Halloween treats from Warner Brothers, just right for a cold and very wet night with clearly disappointed with the lack of Trick or Treaters at our door.
Amongst other goodies their box included two fabulous Halloween themed DVDs, Tom and Jerry Tricks & Treats and Scooby-Doo! Big Top.
Scooby-Doo! Big Top sees the gang taking a relaxing vacation in Atlantic City, of course it turns out to be far from relaxing when they find themselves in the middle of yet another mystery! It’s packed full of werewolves and fun circus action by the Scooby Doo an the rest of the gang. But will they solve the mystery and save the circus?
Tom and Jerry: Tricks and Treats contains 20 spooky episodes of the classic Hanna-Barbera Tom & Jerry cartoons. Imogen loves the rivalry between this pair and laughs out loud at the tricks they play on each other as they run around, not that unlike the kiddywinks!
We had lots of fun despite the lack of trick or treaters, it was the perfect distraction thank you Warner Brothers.
Our lovely friends at Warner Bros recently decided to treat the kidywinks to some sporting goodies, how very appropriate. Our goody box included everything needed to create the perfect sack race, colourful sacks, whistle and reward stickers. What followed was a quick hop around the kitchen by Imogen accompanied by a whistle serenade by Joseph.
Also included in their goody box was a Scooby Doo – Spooky Games DVD. The DVD features a new 23 minute episode where Scooby and the rest of the gang head off to the Invitational Games. In true Scooby Doo style there’s a mystery to be solved and in this episode a 1,000 year old statue comes to life and threatens the games.
The fun continues with with a selection of Scooby’s Laff-A-Lympics episodes where three teams (Scooby Doobies, Yogi Yahooeys and the really Rottens) take part in some truly eccentric events around the globe including mountain climbing and leprechaun hunting! These classic episodes from the 70’s feature some fabulous Hanna-Barbera guest stars including Hong Kong Phooey, Captain Caveman and Huckleberry Hound.
Both Imogen and Joseph thoroughly enjoyed the DVD as did I, it was great to relive some of my childhood memories with them.
Scooby Doo – Spooky Games is available from Amazon currently priced at £4.99.
Today (26th March) sees the DVD release of Happy Feet 2 and the celebrate Warner Bros sent us a lovely box full of treasures including Happy Feet Two, a Happy Feet and March of the Penguins Box Set and some lovely Happy Feet merchandise.
Happy Feet Two, the squeal to the Academy Award®-winning animated smash hit Happy Feet, tells the story of Erik, Mumble’s (the star of Happy Feet) son. Now, while Mumbles is the ultimate King of Tap, his tiny son is quite the opposite and attempts see some embarrassing consequences. Reluctant to dance, Erik runs away to Adélie-Land and encounters the Mighty-Sven, a flying penguin who isn’t as mighty as he seems!
Mumbles sets off to bring back Erik, who now dreams of flying rather than dancing. However, things gets worse when the world is shaken by powerful forces and the penguins get trapped underneath ice. Surely Mumbles’ “Guts and Grit” can bring the penguin nation together to save the day?
Imogen thoroughly enjoyed the film, the animation is amazing and teamed with voices from greats like Elijah Wood and Robin Williams it’s certainly a winning combination. Imogen loved the dancing scenes – well what’s not to love and I adored Bill and Will the Krill, voiced by Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, very funny!
I’ll leave you with a picture of Imogen’s best penguin dancing and an excellent trailer. Happy Feet Two is available to purchase from Amazon currently priced at £9.99.
